The November 1976 cover of Runner’s World featured a cross-country runner who ran the 24.5 mile length of the Running Fence. 24.5 miles was the original marathon distance from the Battlefield of Marathon to Athens, the Olympics before 1908, and Boston Marathon until 1924.
